Mark the location of the tail mount on the tailboom. Leave a little space between the horizontal and vertical tails, about 5mm is enough. |
| 77.
Scrape off the shiny surface layer where the tail mount will be glued. |
| 78.
I prefer to get rid of the lower part of the tail mount rings altogether. They do not contribute to the strength of the joint and make attaching the tail more painful than it needs to be. At a minumum you will need to make one cut through the bottom of the rings, to be able to match the diameter of the tailboom and to inject glue into the joint by lifting the ring flaps a little off the tailboom. |
| 79.
Sand the inside of the mount rings for a better bond. |
| 80.
Place the assembled model up side down on a table. Use several books under the stab to match the fuselage height above the table. Place the stab under the tailboom, square to the tailboom, use the marks on the tailboom for positioning the stab along the boom. |
| 81.
Without shifting the model or the stab, lift the tailboom slightly off the tailmount. Drop a tiny amount of medium CA onto each leg of the tailmount. Press the tailboom down again. Wipe off the extra CA. Check the stab alignment. |
| 82.
Insert the vertical tail again onto the tailboom. Sight from the back to make sure it is pefectly square to the stab and the wing. |
| 83.
Apply thin, then medium CA to the joint line to form a small fillet of glue. |
| 84.
Try your best to make a nice fillet of glue. Apply medium CA to the inside of the tailboom, to attach the internal piece of balsa to the boom walls. |
| 85.
Attach a piece of clear tape to the rudder hinge line. |
| 86.
Carefully bring the rudder over the fin, attach the tape starting from one end. |
| 87.
Cut off the extra tape. |
| 88.
Sand top and bottom edges of the vertical tail to make a nice continuous curve from the fin to the rudder. Round the top and bottom edges of the rudder and fin. |
| 89.
If you plan on using an antenna on the tailboom, start by gluing a small piece of teflon tube to the fuselage wall. It helps to have a carbon rod inside when handling and gluing the teflon tube. |
| 90.
The tube for routing the antenna to the tailboom should stop somewhere behind the rear end of the nose pod. Do not glue it to the fuselage yet. It will be glued together with the pushrod housing. |
