Taboo GT - Building Guide
61. Enlarge the hole in the wing with an 11/64 bit. Cut down the nylon bolt.
62. Check the wing attachment and alignment.
63. Next step - finishing the tails.
64. Round the leading edges. Bevel the hinge line on both sides. The tape goes on the top of the stab, the bevels are on the bottom.
65. Try to make the leading edge of slightly oval shape rather than round. This will reduce the drag of the tail surfaces.
66. The bevel angle of the hinge line need not be excessive. Make sure the edge stays straight, otherwise when you put together the two halves, you will have large gaps along the hinge line.
67. This step is very important, do not skip it. Apply thin CA to the edge of both halves of the stab (and vertical tail later). Otherwise the fiberglass will lift off the balsa at the hinge line as soon as you apply any force to the elevator/rudder. Done properly, a taped hinge usually lives longer than the tail feather itself. In case of problems it is very easy to undo the hinge and re-apply the tape.
68. Cut, drill, and sand the small plywood piece for the stab.
69. Use X-acto knife to "hold" the plywood piece while glueing it to the stab with thin CA. Make sure the holes are alined.
70. The plywood piece attached to the stab.
71. Attach clear tape to one half of the stab (e.g., elevator).
72. Carefully bring the elevator with the tape to the second half and join them starting from one end.
73. Prepare the vertical tail in the same way. Leading edges, hinge bevels, CA on the hinge line. Important - the rudder pushrod and control horn must be on the outer side of the model. If you are a right-handed pilot and launch the model by the left wing tip, the ruder pushrod must be on the right side! The hinge bevel is on the same side as the control horn. The rudder shown on the picture is for a left-handed pilot.
74. Insert the tailboom into the two slits in the vertical tail. You may have to squeeze the boom end from the sides or from top and bottom to match the distance between the two slits. The center piece of the vertical tail between the slits can be partially removed, but it helps to keep at least halve of its length attached to the tail. It supports the tailboom from inside and reduces its deformations under tail loads.
75. Attach the stab to the stab mount.
